How to Perform Aqeeqah? Complete Step-by-Step Guide
Performing Aqeeqah is an act of devotion, gratitude, and blessing for a newborn child. While the concept is simple, following the correct Sunnah procedure ensures your sacrifice fulfills all Islamic requirements smoothly.
This step-by-step guide covers everything parents need to know to perform Aqeeqah accurately according to Islamic traditions.
Step 1: Calculate the 7th Day
The Sunnah highly encourages performing the Aqeeqah on the 7th day after the baby’s birth.
-
How to count: The day the child is born counts as Day 1 if born before sunset (Maghrib). If born after sunset, the following day counts as Day 1.
-
Example: If a child is born on Monday morning, the 7th day falls on the following Sunday.
Note: If financial or logistical reasons prevent you from performing it on the 7th day, you can do it on the 14th day, 21st day, or anytime before the child reaches adulthood.
Step 2: Select the Correct Number of Animals
Select animals based on the gender of the newborn:
-
Baby Boy: 2 goats or sheep.
-
Baby Girl: 1 goat or sheep.
Both animals for a boy should ideally be similar in age, weight, and general appearance.
Step 3: Choose Healthy Livestock
The livestock chosen for Aqeeqah must meet the same rigorous health criteria as animals selected for Qurbani (Udhiyah):
-
Age Limit: Goats and sheep must be at least 1 year old.
-
Physical Condition: The animal must be healthy, well-fed, and active.
-
No Defect Rule: It must not have significant defects—such as visible blindness, severe limping, missing horns from the root, or extreme weakness.
Step 4: Perform the Slaughtering (Zabiha)
The slaughter must be carried out in accordance with Islamic Shariah:
-
Intention (Niyyah): Form the mental intention that the sacrifice is being made for the Aqeeqah of [Child’s Name], son/daughter of [Father’s Name].
-
Sharp Blade: Ensure the knife is extremely sharp to minimize pain to the animal.
-
Recitation: Recite the Islamic invocation at the moment of slaughter:
“Bismillahi Allahu Akbar” (In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest).
Step 5: Complete the 7th-Day Sunnah Acts
Along with the animal sacrifice, three other Sunnah actions should ideally take place on the same day:
-
Shaving the Head: Shave the head of the newborn completely (for both boys and girls).
-
Weighing & Giving Charity: Weigh the shaved hair and calculate its weight in silver. Donate that equivalent value in cash to the poor and needy.
-
Naming the Child: Formally announce a meaningful Islamic name for the baby.
Step 6: Portion and Distribute the Meat
Once the meat is processed, distribute it into three parts according to Sunnah principles:
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ AQEEQAH MEAT DISTRIBUTION │
├───────────────────┬───────────────────┬─────────────────┤
│ 1/3 Family │ 1/3 Friends │ 1/3 Charity │
│ (Household) │ & Neighbors │ (The Poor) │
└───────────────────┴───────────────────┴─────────────────┘
-
Family: Retain a portion for your household meal.
-
Gifts: Send portions to relatives, neighbors, and friends.
-
Charity: Give a portion to underprivileged families in your community.
Note: The meat can be distributed raw or cooked into a celebratory meal to feed family and guests.
